Over the past eight years, Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl has led the basketball program to heights they haven't seen in decades. And the Tigers are looking to make sure he sticks around to finish the job.
According to Justin Lee of the Opelika-Auburn News, Auburn are working on a contract extension with Pearl. Per the report, the nature of the deal will ensure that Pearl finishes his coaching career with the Tigers.
The talks come as Louisville and Maryland, both major programs, look to make splash new hires. Auburn clearly wanted to head off any potential offers to Pearl at the pass.
Auburn fans are understandably thrilled by the news. Many have taken to Twitter pleading with Auburn to get that extension completed quickly. Some want them to make it a lifetime contract too:
Bruce Pearl took over at Auburn in 2014 and had them at the top of the SEC by 2018. But 2019 was where Pearl truly established himself as one of the Tigers' all-time great coaches.
After winning the SEC Tournament, Pearl took Auburn all the way to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament. It was the first Final Four appearance in school history and only the second time they ever reached the Elite Eight.
At 19-1 right now, Pearl has Auburn at the top of the college basketball world. And while he may not keep them there this year, the Tigers believe that he'll get them closer than anyone else.
Does Bruce Pearl deserve the contract extension he's reportedly getting?
