Notre Dame plucked Brian Kelly from Cincinnati over a decade ago. Will the Fighting Irish do the same with Luke Fickell?

The Notre Dame head coaching job is open for the taking following Kelly's departure to LSU. Fickell appears to be the top candidate, but right now it's only speculation.

Fickell could add to what's already been a chaotic coaching carousel. But right now, he's solely focused on his Cincinnati Bearcats.

Fickell told reporters on Tuesday that "there is nothing" to address regarding the Notre Dame speculation. In fact, he said there's no speculation at all.

“I don’t know what there is to address? There is nothing," Fickell said. "That’s the crazy thing. It’s all whatever is being said out there. There is no speculation... All I care about is the guys that sit in this room.”

That's not exactly a hard no from Cincinnati's head coach. The reality is Luke Fickell to Notre Dame makes too much sense. Take a look at what college football fans are saying about Fickell's latest comments.

Notre Dame is an attractive possibility. Right now, though, Luke Fickell is trying to make history. Cincinnati is currently the No. 4 team in the College Football Playoff. The Bearcats will make history if they end up in the postseason. Fickell isn't going to walk away from that.

There's also plenty of reason to believe Fickell may want to stick around because of Cincinnati's eventual move to the Big 12. Maybe he thinks the Bearcats can become the Big 12's king once Oklahoma and Texas bolt for the SEC.

Once Notre Dame comes calling, though, Fickell will have to listen. Who wouldn't?
