An unspecified health issue with Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, that people on social media have been speculating about for a while turned out to be something about as bad as anyone could imagine.

In a heartfelt message shared on Friday, Princess Catherine announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer and will be undergoing treatment. She said that it was a shock to her and her family and hopes that she can help inspire others who are battling cancer as well.

"I am now in the early stages of that treatment," she said.

"This, of course, came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment.

"But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.

"At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone."

People on social media have been praying for her ever since she made the announcement:

"You are such a strong person, Catherine! I’m so sorry that people can just not give you the respect and privacy you have asked for. I will pray for all of you and I hope now you can get that space you need to heal," one user replied.

"This is incredibly brave of you to share after these past few months. My thoughts are with you and your family Catherine. We love you," wrote another.

"May your treatment be successful and your wellness improve. Take care of yourself and your family," a third wrote.

Middleton's husband, Prince William, is the heir-apparent to the King of England. Her eldest son, Prince George of Wales, is second in line to the throne, followed by her daughter Charlotte and younger son Louis.
