Earlier this month FOX Sports announced that it is reviving the long-dormant USFL in March 2022. Today, they made a new announcement that is sure to get USFL fans even more excited.
On Monday, the USFL unveiled the identities of the eight teams that will compete in the new league. The teams are the Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Jersey Generals, Michigan Panthers, New Orleans Breakers, Philadelphia Stars, Pittsburgh Maulers and Tampa Bay Bandits.
All of those names once belonged to teams in the original USFL. Some of them eventually changed the names or cities while others kept them until the league folded.
On Twitter, tons of fans are already pumped to see teams that are either close to them or that they have fond memories of. Some are also hoping that the USFL's success in 2022 can help revive some of the other franchises that collapsed when the league folded:
Still others decided to have some fun at the expense of other NFL teams:
But while the USFL has revived eight team names, it's not going to revive the venues they played at.
The current plan is to have all USFL games played at the same stadium - Protective Stadium in Birmingham. If the season succeeds (and they presumably manage to remain financially solvent), they'll try to expand to the actual cities.
Which USFL team will you be supporting when the league launches next year?
