It's probably time for the Pittsburgh Steelers to send Ben Roethlisberger to the bench.
The veteran quarterback didn't even belong on the field against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday afternoon. Although his numbers were decent (38 of 58 for 318 yards and one touchdown with two picks), they don't quite tell the full story.
The game simply appeared too fast for Big Ben. He had a ton of poor throws, couldn't escape the pocket like he used to and was a step slower than the opposing defense.
Steven Ruiz of The Ringer put together a highlight reel of Roethlisberger's poor performance on Sunday. It's since gone viral.
Yikes. That was painful to watch.
The clock is probably ticking on Ben Roethlisberger's days as the Steelers' starting quarterback. It will come down to how quickly Pittsburgh is eliminated from playoff contention. Until then, Mike Tomlin will probably give Big Ben the reins.
Looking ahead, life won't get any easier for the Steelers. Their upcoming stretch features the Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. They'll then get a bye in Week 7.
Let's say Big Ben and the Steelers go 1-2 over the next three weeks entering their bye week. A break in the action could give Tomlin the opportunity to reassess his quarterback situation and potentially make a change heading into Week 8.
If Roethlisberger wants to avoid such a route, he needs to be better. But it's tough to imagine the veteran playing better against the Packers this Sunday than he did versus the Bengals in Week 3.
