Ever since Gregg Berhalter was ousted as head coach of the U.S. men's national soccer team, American soccer fans have been eagerly awaiting news on who his permanent replacement will be. This week, they may have gotten their answer.

According to soccer reporter Alex Calabrese, former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch is the "clear frontrunner" to be named the USMNT coach. Per the report, his appointment is "practically done" with the move expected to be made official after the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament this summer.

Anthony Hudson is the USMNT's interim head coach.

Marsch has been a popular choice for the job since before Berhalter was even let go. His track record in both Major League Soccer and Europe along with his previous experience as a USMNT assistant has made him an ideal candidate.

Marsch has a decent resume as well. He won two regular season titles in MLS with the New York Red Bulls between 2015 and 2018, and two league titles with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria between 2019 and 2021.

Jesse Marsch is not without his flaws though. He was named manager at RB Leipzig in 2021 but won just eight games before being fired less than six months into the job.

Three months later, Marsch was hired as manager at Leeds United in the Premier League. He managed to save the club from being relegated in the 2021-22 season, but was fired this past February when the team struggled to stay above the relegation zone.

But Marsch has also worked closely with some of the USMNT's biggest stars at the club level. Chemistry may not be the problem that it allegedly was under Gregg Berhalter's watch.

Will Jesse Marsch be the guy to lead the USMNT at the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
