The 2021 season has been a disappointing one for the Carolina Panthers passing attack. As a result, wide receiver Terrace Marshall has had an underwhelming rookie campaign.

Unfortunately, the former LSU product saw his first year in the NFL take another frustrating turn on Sunday.

The Panthers announced on Sunday, shortly before kickoff in Miami against the Dolphins, that Marshall would be inactive for the first time this season. The rookie wide receiver did not appear on Carolina's injury reports throughout the week leading up to the game, making him a healthy scratch.

2021 sixth-round pick Shi Smith will be active in Marshall's place on Sunday.

Marshall's rookie season already hasn't lived up to expectations, so Sunday's news is quite the disappointment for both him and the Panthers.

In nine games this year, Marshall has just 14 receptions for 116 yards. He also hasn't caught a touchdown pass, which is shocking considering he hauled in 23 touchdowns in his final two years at LSU.

Part of Marshall's woes can be attributed to the struggles of Sam Darnold at quarterback for Carolina. The Panthers have made the switch to Cam Newton, but even last week against the Washington Football Team with Newton under center, the rookie wideout couldn't make a catch in his 14 snaps on the field.

It remains to be seen whether Marshall will be inactive moving forward in Carolina. If he does want to get back in the receiver rotation, he'll likely need to work his way back up the depth chart, which seems like a tall task at this point in the year.

Without Marshall, the Panthers (5-6) will look to bounce back from last week's loss against the Dolphins on Sunday.
