The Cam Newton-Patriots era came to an abrupt end on Tuesday morning. Where will the former MVP go from here? Some are speculating he could end up with the Dallas Cowboys.

According to ESPN's Jordan Shultz, the Cowboys are "exploring" the possibility of signing Newton. In doing so, they'd add him as a backup to Dak Prescott, who's suffered his fair share of injuries over the past year.

"The #Cowboys will “begin exploring Cam Newton” as a potential backup to Dak Prescott, per source," Schultz

The #Cowboys will “begin exploring Cam Newton” as a potential backup to Dak Prescott, per source. Dallas just cut two QBs in Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci. Prescott’s current backup is 27-year-old Cooper Rush, who has just one career completion.

The Cowboys should look into Newton's new-found availability. When Prescott went down with a season-ending injury last year, Dallas was in a tough spot and the season fell apart. If Newton serves as backup to Prescott, the Cowboys would find themselves with one of the best quarterback situations in the NFL.

The only obstacle here would be Cam Newton's pride. He's never been willing to join a team with the expectation he'd be a backup. He wants to be the starter, and there's little chance he'd ever replace Dak Prescott.

Regardless, NFL fans have been discussing the Newton-to-Cowboys rumor all morning. It's not the worst idea. Even Skip Bayless likes the possibility.

"Cam Newton was made to be a Dallas Cowboy," Bayless said on Twitter. "It is The Greatest Show on Earth and Cam is a great showman. He is the perfect fit right here, right now for my Cowboys."

What say you, Cowboys fans? Should Jerry Jones make a push to sign Cam Newton?
