Former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes paid up on a bet to a former teammate in amazing fashion over the weekend.

The former Red Raider watched the Texas Tech basketball team fall to NC State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by a final score of 80-67. Unfortunately, he appeared to make a bet with former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele about whose team would go further in the tournament.

The Longhorns took down Colorado State in the first round before falling to Tennessee in the second round. While the Longhorns didn't make the Sweet 16, they did make it further than the Red Raiders.

With that, Mahomes had to pay up.

PEOPLE shared details from the bet:

The selfie of shame came with the caption, "A bets a bet... okay cool #Hookem," likely as a nod to University of Texas at Austin's Longhorns advancing in the tournament, while Mahomes' alma mater Texas Tech fell short in their March Madness showing Friday.

In the photo, Mahomes threw his horns in the air as his massive cow mask hid whatever disappointment he may have been feeling at the time.

"Horns always go up!" Buechele said in response to Mahomes' post. The duo previously played on the Chiefs together after the former Longhorns quarterback signed as an undrafted free agent in 2021.

He backed up Mahomes for two seasons before he eventually signed with the Buffalo Bills.
