"I’m told Mel Tucker & MSU are close to a new deal," Cowherd reported on Saturday morning. Well, just a few days later, a new report suggested Tucker will become one of the highest-paid coaches in the country.
According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, Tucker is in line for a massive pay raise. If the deal goes through, he'll immediately become one of the highest-paid head coaches in all of football - not just college.
Here's more from the Detroit Free Press:
MSU is preparing a historic $95 million, 10-year contract extension for Tucker to remain with the Spartans, university sources confirmed to the Free Press on Wednesday. The 49-year-old Cleveland native is set to become among the highest-paid coaches in the country.
The Spartans have been one of the most surprising teams in college football this year. Michigan State had a 2-5 record in his first season as the team's head coach. This year, though, Tucker's team took a huge step forward.
Michigan State sits at 9-1 on the season. The Spartans are a legitimate Big Ten contender for the first time in years.
LSU reportedly showed interest in Tucker to replace Ed Orgeron. However, Michigan State appears to be willing to pay up to keep its head coach.
The Spartans face off against Ohio State this weekend. The new contract could be coming just in time.
