After weeks of speculation, Sean Payton has made a decision on his future with the New Orleans Saints. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Payton has informed the Saints that he's stepping away from football.
It was reported this past weekend that Payton was considering retirement. Now, we know his answer.
FOX Sports insider Jay Glazer hinted at Payton being undecided on his future during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.
“Sean [Payton] changes his mind every two seconds,” Glazer said, via John Hendrix of Saints News Network. “We talk about it a lot. It’s why I haven’t reported anything because he changes his mind like every two minutes. But that’s also why I said two weeks ago on FOX NFL Sunday during the coaching carousel was that there could be a coach or two step away just because of these last two years of COVID, it’s taken its toll on people."
Clearly, the past two seasons have taken its toll on Payton.
Payton will walk away from the Saints as one of the most iconic figures in franchise history.
Not only did Payton rebuild a team that was struggling for several years, he led it to a Super Bowl. He'll ultimately finish his Saints tenure with a 152-89 record.
It's unclear at this time if Payton will consider coaching for another team or enter the broadcast industry.
