Oklahoma might've escaped Saturday's game against West Virginia, but the Sooners didn't completely get out unscathed. Starting quarterback Spencer Rattler took the worst of the blow when he was booed by his home fans in Norman in the midst of the battle with the Mountaineers.

The Sooners eked out a 16-13 victory on a last second field goal, but for most of the contest, the game hung in the balance. In the middle of the second quarter, Oklahoma fans started to grow angsty and turned on Rattler after he threw an interception.

Not only did the Sooners faithful start to boo their starting quarterback, but they started chanting for Rattler’s backup, Caleb Williams, to enter the game.

“We want Caleb!” fans chanted on Saturday night.

The reaction to Rattler's play was shocking and many on social media couldn't believe that Oklahoma fans booed their starting quarterback in the middle of a close game. Although he might've heard the chants, the Sooners sophomore said he paid no mind to the opinions of those in the stands.

“I don't worry about that all,” Rattler said of the boos after the game on ESPN. “I don’t listen to them, they’re not on the field.”

Rattler's reaction is extremely mature given his youth and the stunning nature of the crowd's behavior. He also proved to Sooners fans that can still get the job done in a tight conference game. Oklahoma outlasted West Virginia behind Rattler's steady play in the second half and a strong defensive effort. The sophomore quarterback ended the game 26-for-36 with 256 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Rattler entered the 2021 season as a Heisman Trophy frontrunner and hasn't met the high expectations that were set out for him. That being said, the Sooners are still undefeated through four games because of their quarterback, so booing him was a questionable decision. The Oklahoma faithful will certainly need to reflect on their behavior before Rattler takes the field next week against Kansas State and before the Sooners return home to Norman for the Red River Rivalry on Oct. 9.
