The NFL's 2021 regular season kicked off this week, Major League Baseball's pennant races are heating up and the U.S. Open had an incredible weekend, but the weirdest sports news of the day comes from the Video Music Awards.

According to multiple reports, MMA star Conor McGregor nearly fought rock star Machine Gun Kelly on the red carpet on Sunday night.

Yes, you read that correctly.

McGregor, who continues to recover from his leg injury, allegedly threw a drink at MGK after getting denied a picture.

TMZ Sports had some alleged details:

Sources connected to the situation tell us Conor asked MGK for a photo, which Kelly denied ... and that apparently escalated into him pushing Conor, whom we're told stumbled back and spilled his drink. When he collected himself and whatever was left of his drink, our sources say Conor allegedly chucked the drink at Kelly ... as well as Megan, whom we're told was nearby. Their respective teams broke it up before things got really ugly -- and Conor was given his walking cane back -- something that had fallen to the ground during the scuffle. FYI ... Conor made it inside after this -- the camera just panned over him during the broadcast.

The sports world isn't sure what to make of this one. It's just bizarre. "Conor McGregor went from having beef with Mayweather to Khabib to Dustin Poirier to.......Machine Gun Kelly ??? that brother cooked," one fan joked. "Idk what’s funnier, the way Conor McGregor looks like he’s really struggling or the way Machine Gun Kelly just isn’t bothered," another fan added. "Conor McGregor is the perfect example of the quote ‘You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain,'" one fan said.

McGregor, 33, last fought in July. He lost to Dustin Poirier in a technical knockout after breaking his tibia.

He appears to be healthy enough to go after Machine Gun Kelly. It's unclear if he's ready to fight anyone legitimate, though...
