Sports World Reacts To Brittney Griner's National Anthem Decision
Britney Griner will stand for the National Anthem before tonight's WNBA season opener in Los Angeles.
In the past, Griner has refused to stand for the anthem due to concerns about racial injustices in the United States. She once even went as far as to say “the U.S. national anthem should not be played at sporting games.”
But, since returning to the United States after her nine-month imprisonment in Russia, Griner has apparently had a change of heart.
The sports world took to Twitter to react to Griner's reported decision.
"Go through hard times and you realize who the real enemy is," one wrote.
"It was a cruel life lesson, but she learned it. I give her all the credit in the world. She knows now why we stand," another added.
"This is nice to hear. I'm glad she's teachable, and her ability to acknowledge that the anthem is worth standing for will hopefully send a message," another said.
"A little bit of tyranny made her appreciate the freedoms we have in America! Glad to see this," another wrote.
Griner stood for the National Anthem during a WNBA preseason game earlier this week.
“Hearing the national anthem, it definitely hit different,” Griner told reporters after the game, via azcentral.com. “It’s like when you go for the Olympics, you’re sitting there, about to get gold put on your neck, the flags are going up, and the anthem is playing, it just hits different.”
Tonight's season opener will tipoff at 11 p.m. ET.
