Steve Kerr Reveals How He Found Out Kevin Durant Was Leaving
While most of the NBA world was glued to their phones and computers at the start of free agency this past July, Steve Kerr was simply not.
The Golden State Warriors head coach was on a vacation in Hawaii.
The three-time NBA champion head coach has revealed that he found out about Kevin Durant's decision to join the Brooklyn Nets when he was on the beach.
He settled into his chair and opened his book, "Billion Dollar Whale," the true story of a social climber who pulled off one of the most incredible heists in the history of the financial industry. Kerr purposely left his cell phone in his resort hotel room, even though it was July 1, the start of the free-agent frenzy. He became momentarily lost in the text of his book, until a 30-something man not 30 feet away from the Golden State coach, who had not recognized Kerr, suddenly screeched.
"Oh my god!" he exclaimed to his buddy. "KD is going to the Nets!"
Welp, that's one way to find out your MVP forward is leaving your team in free agency.
It seems like Golden State was expecting that to happen, though. The Warriors quickly rebounded with a sign-and-trade for D'Angelo Russell.
Golden State also signed Draymond Green and Klay Thompson to new deals this summer.
