The 5 Biggest Coaching Buyouts In College Football History
You know things have bottomed out when a place pays you eight figures just to go away.
On Sunday, news came down that Texas A&M has decided to part ways with head coach Jimbo Fisher (ironically after one of the Aggies' more impressive wins this year) in what's being reported as the largest buyout in college football history.
A&M is said to have agreed to a massive $76 million buyout. Far and away the biggest we've seen in the sport and over $50 million clear of the next highest figure. Here's a look at how it stacks up:
- Jimbo Fisher ($76 million)
- Gus Malzahn ($21.5 million)
- Charlie Weis ($19 million)
- Willie Taggert ($18 million)
- Tom Herman ($15.4 million)
Fans reacted to Jimbo's payday on social media.
"Lol it's nothing to them oil barons," a user said. "Gas in Texas gonna be a little higher for while though."
"It's wild to consider the confluence of factors that would have to occur for someone to break this record (for on-field performance). Like the human mind trying to comprehend the vastness of the universe," another replied.
"a man can dream," a fan tweeted.
"Don't wanna ever hear about Auburn buying coaches out ever again," another person commented.
Fisher is 45-25 in his six seasons since coming to College Station from Florida State. He had just signed a 10-year, $95 million contract with the university in 2021.
