Turnout At Tonight's Nebraska Volleyball Game Is Absolutely Insane
Weeks before Nebraska's football team plays its home opener, fans packed Memorial Stadium to watch an unprecedented volleyball spectacle.
With tickets in such high demand, the Huskers booked the massive stadium for Wednesday's match. They had no problem filling a venue that can house approximately 90,000 people.
A full house roared as Nebraska stormed out of the tunnel at Memorial Stadium. Here's footage of the surreal scene in Lincoln:
It's safe to say they shattered the previous college volleyball attendance record of 18,755, but their sights may be higher. Last year, a UEFA Women's Champions League match in Barcelona became the most attended women's sports event ever with 91,648 people.
Although there's no official attendance reported as of this writing, Nebraska at least came close to setting the record.
The moment was so monumental that Nebraska canceled Wednesday's classes. The board of regents also allowed the stadium to sell beer, which isn't permitted at football games.
"I don't know how to properly define just how big this is," Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts said, per ESPN's Elizabeth Merrill. "Unless [the football team is] undefeated when we play Michigan in Week 5, I don't know of anything that's going to be bigger."
Nebraska has won four national championships under head coach John Cook, most recently in 2017. The Huskers' loss to Wisconsin in the 2021 national final set the previous volleyball attendance benchmark at Ohio's Nationwide Arena.
They'll look to remain undefeated early this seas in front of Lincoln's historic crowd.
