Uncle Of Legendary WWE Superstar Dead At 66

The uncle of one of the best wrestlers of all-time has passed away at 66 years old.

Rey Misterio St., a legendary wrestler himself and the uncle to longtime WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio, passed away this month. He was 66 years old. 

His family announced the passing on Friday. 

Misterio Sr., whose real name is Miguel Ángel López Díaz, appeared to pass away last week. Details of his death were not immediately clear online. 

Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, who Misterio performed with, shared a statement on social media.

"We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest," the statement reads.

Tributes for Misterio Sr. have been pouring in on social media throughout the weekend.

"RIP Rey Misterio Sr (uncle of Rey Mysterio) who was 66 years old," one fan wrote.

"Rey Misterio Sr passed away this morning. I cannot begin to say how painful this is, he was such an important part of my fandom going back to the Compton days in the early 90’s. My condolences to his wife Ana, and the entire Misterio family, especially their sons and nephew Rey Mysterio," one fan added.

"The CAC extends it's condolences to Rey Mysterio Jr and family on the passing of his legendary uncle known as Rey Misterio Sr. Rest in peace Sir," one fan added.

"Still trying to process today, but I did notice some of these older stories in a Lucha magazine, immediately after Rey Misterio Sr lost his mask to Fishman, giving the public his name and story," one fan added.

Longtime wrestling personality Dave Meltzer added: "So sorry to hear about the death of the original Rey Misterio (Sr.), Miguel Lopez, at 66, the uncle of the WWE star. In his heyday he was almost like Tijuana's version of Jerry Lawler in Memphis. As a trainer, his track record matches the best, his nephew, the original Psicosis, Konnan, Halloween and Damian all in the same class."
