We haven’t had much offense in the final game of the XFL’s opening weekend. We did have an incredible punt though, courtesy of Marquette King.
King, the former Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos punter, did not play in the NFL this past season. Now a member of the St. Louis BattleHawks, King showed tonight he still has his kicking chops though.
In the third quarter, the 2016 second-team NFL All-Pro selection blasted a punt that seemed destined to be a touchback at first. However, the spin on the ball was tremendous, and it looked like it would stop at the one-yard-line.
Instead, an overeager member of the St. Louis coverage team tried to down the ball and instead knocked it into the end zone. King’s perfect punt was a touchback after all.
ESPN sideline analyst and longtime NFL punter Pat McAfee was beside himself during and after this play. He nearly lost his mind on the broadcast and on Twitter.
.@MarquetteKing just had…maybe the greatest punt ever?*

Making this play worse is the touchback rule in the XFL. The ball is not spotted at the 20-yardline like in the NFL. It is instead placed at the 35-yard line.
It’s okay, Marquette. We all see what you did anyway.
